My name is Jacqui Hewson, back then I was Jackie Prpich from Livonia Michigan Thanks much, Jacqui ------- 6 --------- I am seeking an old pen pal named Jim Bell (James R. Bell), here in the East Bay of Calif. He wrote while he was in Vietnam, from 1970-1971, then a note when he got home. We were always going to hook up, but alas.... life happened in between! Travelaura@aol.com ------- 5 --------- Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2007 15:18:04 -0500 From: "James Bell"Hey Jim Bell, it's me, Jim Bell. I need your help tracking down a retired US Navy pilot and former POW, James Franklin Bell. When I last visited your site last Summer, I read a brief bio on him. It seems to now have been removed. I'd like to contact him, and tell him how his name has actually had an impact on my life and career choice. Let me explain... In 1988, I was in the Navy, and entered a special training called SERE School, in Brunswick, ME. This was a mock POW camp, wherein Naval Aviators are made to feel what it's like to be shot down behind enemy lines, captured, and if possible, try to escape. I noted a plaque on the entrance doorway into the auditorium where we sat for the class work part of the training. It was a list of POW's who had actually gone through that school. At the top of the list, with 8 years in the Hanoi Hilton, was a LtCDR James F. Bell....me! I was obviously, well, pretty freaked out by it, and tried not to see this as some sort of omen. It made for an interesting story in the years to follow. I never heard anything else about him all these years, until I happened to discover your web site. Please help me track down this particular Jim Bell, obviously no easy task in a Universe seemingly brimming with Jim Bell's. Thanks, Jim. James F. I read your Jim Bell page and found it very amusing. Perhaps you could help me find the one I'm looking for. I couldn't pay you, except by reimbursing you for any phone expenses you might incur, but you would earn my eternal gratitude. I am a Sixties rock historian. For the past decade, I have been researching the life and work of the late Curt Boettcher. Who? Curt produced the Association's first album, including their hits "Along Comes Mary" and "Cherish." He is best known among fans of psychedelic rock for his production, songwriting, and singing with two classic groups, the Millennium and Sagittarius. He was an artist on the level of Brian Wilson and Phil Spector and was very much ahead of his time. I am very happy to say that my published articles on Curt Boettcher have spurred record labels in America and England to reissue the Millennium and Sagittarius albums this year. With so much interest in his music, I am redoubling my efforts to track down people who worked with him. One of them is Jim Bell. Jim Bell is from Colorado. He moved to L.A. in the mid-Sixties and formed a country-rock group called the Poor, which included Randy Meisner, later of the Eagles. He sang and played flute in the group. They, too, were ahead of their time. Not a lot of groups were playing country-rock in 1966, two years before the Byrds released their landmark "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" LP. In addition to the Poor, Jim Bell was in a quartet with Curt Boettcher called the Ballroom. While they only had one single out, on Warner Brothers, many of their recordings were later passed off as Millennium and Sagittarius recordings on those groups' albums. Here are some other things I've been told about Jim Bell that might help you identify him: He left the music scene in the late Sixties (was only in it for a few years) and is said to have gotten a degree in marine biology. He was married to Melody Clinger, but I believe they are divorced. I realize that you have plenty of work to do at Cornell without tracking down a Jim Bell for a complete stranger. I am writing this in the hope that perhaps you already have come across a Jim Bell who fits those qualifications, or perhaps he has found you via your page. Like I said, if there is any way you could find him for me, you would earn my eternal gratitude. I would even take the train to Ithaca and personally give you one dozen roses, though I can't promise they'd be the expensive kind with a real scent. BTW, Cornell is my grandmother's alma mater. Thanks very much for your attention. I look forward to hearing from you. Even if there is nothing you can do, I wish you all the best. Cheers, Dawn Eden
